What is Problem Gambling?

Problem Gambling: Is any type of gambling activity that disrupts other areas of your life, or the lives of the people around you. This includes school or work activities, relationships with family or friends, or your own physical and mental health.

Problem Gambling is an issue for all age groups and in Southeastern Pennsylvania the addiction and its associated societal problems will be on the rise due to the growth of legalized gambling in the area. Casino gambling in Pennsylvania brought in $1.3 billion in revenue in 2010 and has established itself as a solid revenue generator for the state. It is not going away nor is the consequent societal problems. In response The Council will be here to assist persons affected by gambling.

  • There are several terms used to describe pathological gamblers. Clinically, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) classifies pathological gambling as an impulse control disorder and describes 10 criteria to guide diagnoses, ranging from “repeated unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop gambling” to committing “illegal acts such as forgery, fraud, theft or embezzlement to finance gambling.”
